I recently did a teaching about the Day of Atonement. Many have asked for more information on this special season. When my friend Steve Munsey taught about the Day of Atonement on This Is Your Day! we got a tremendous response.
The Day of Atonement, as Steve explains, is particularly significant in Scripture:
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God. (Leviticus 23:26-28)
Yet by now you may be asking, “But aren’t those blessings of the Day of Atonement and the other feasts only for the children of Israel, God’s chosen people? If I’m not Jewish, how could they have any relevance to me?”
“These Are My Days!”
The Feasts of Israel were all fulfilled in Christ Jesus—including Rosh Hashanah, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles:
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. (Romans 5:8-11)
The Day of Atonement was fulfilled when Christ Jesus died on the cross, and it is observed among believers at the moment of salvation. All the feasts and the sacrificial offerings of the Old Testament have been fulfilled in Christ Jesus completely.
As you will see on the Mount of Olives telecast, Pastor Steve Munsey teaches that are three feasts in which God says, “These are My days.”
They aren’t Jewish feast days. They aren’t the church’s days. They are God’s days—Passover, Pentecost, and Atonement.
These are days when He makes an appointment to meet with us. And we have been told to honor these feast days forever.
God has marked these three important days. Yes, God’s covenant has changed to a better covenant, but He did not demolish the Old Testament covenant:
* To the children of Israel, the feasts were observed.
* In Christ, the feasts were fulfilled.
* In the church, the feasts are applied.
We must learn to apply each, and we must apply them in order to have victory in every area of life.
Also, it is important to note that amazing things happen when people unleash God’s supernatural blessings through obedience during this time of atonement!
Seven Blessings of the Atonement Offering
As Steve Munsey teaches, of all the seven yearly appointments with God, the Day of Atonement was (and still is) the most solemn and awe-filled of commemorations. It was a time set aside for national and sanctuary cleansing. On this day, special sacrifices were offered for atonement or reconciliation.
God established the Day of Atonement to be kept forever: “So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance” (Exodus 12:11, 14, NKJV).
This feast was established not only for the Israelites in the time of their flight from Egypt, but also consecrated as an “appointed (holy) time” each year throughout both the Old and the New Testaments.
Lost through the centuries since AD 325 is the fact that God promised blessings to those who observe His feasts. Specifically, those obedient with the Day of Atonement were promised seven blessings—seven specific, supernatural atonement blessings.
As Steve Munsey teaches, these seven blessings connected with the observance of the Day of Atonement are specifically mentioned in the book of Joel:
The Lord will answer and say to His people, “Behold, I will send you grain and new wine and oil, And you will be satisfied by them....”
Fear not, O land; Be glad and rejoice, For the Lord has done marvelous things!… Rejoice in the Lord your God;
[First Atonement Blessing: A Double Portion] For He has given you the former rain faithfully, And He will cause the rain to come down for you—The former rain, And the latter rain in the first month.
[Second Atonement Blessing: Financial Outpouring] The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
[Third Atonement Blessing: Restoration] “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, The crawling locust, The consuming locust, And the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you.
[Fourth Atonement Blessing: Special miracles] You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame.
[Fifth Atonement Blessing: A Divine Presence] Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the Lord your God And there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame.
[Sixth Atonement Blessing: Blessings on Your Family] “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
[Seventh Atonement Blessing: Deliverance] And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.(Joel 2:19, 21, 23, 24-26, 27-32, NKJV, bold text mine)
Are You Ready?
The autumn season, specifically the time of Atonement, is a very holy time with God. This was the time of which Joel was writing and prophesying.
The question is, are you ready for the seven blessings of the Atonement that are listed in Joel 2?
Very few people honor this feast day, this Day of Atonement, yet God has given the word to those of us who are beginning to understand and declare the significance of God’s command to honor His holy days.
The people of God everywhere are starting to catch the vision that God has put within the modern church: His holy days are still holy.
His holy convocation is still being called to all who will listen!
However, for nearly seventeen centuries these powerful truths have been mostly ignored and even rejected by Christians. Thankfully, that is now changing. It must change! There is too much at stake during these crucial, prophetic days.
Steve Munsey says, “I believe the time is perfect now to tell people how their lives will change dramatically when they restore the Day of Atonement observance and offering, for God absolutely, positively sets schedules and time boundaries, especially for His feasts and blessings.”
On the telecast, you will hear how God is poised to pour out these seven blessings upon your life as you unleash these special ancient blessings in your life today.
This Fertile Season
These Atonement offering blessings were (and are!) specific and astounding. When God offers a covenant with His people, as He does with the seven blessings of the Atonement, it is a mutual obligation.
During this special fertile season, place a significant seed in God’s soil and see it work for you. We are told, time after time, to expect a harvest.
I believe that God will multiply your special offering back to you in supernatural ways during this sacred season.
The Lord Jesus promises, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6:38).
God’s Special Atonement Offering Blessings
On the television program, Steve Munsey urges people to give a significant seed-gift during this sacred season.
I encourage you to seek the Lord on what you should give. Above all else, be sure to be part of this special Atonement offering and step into the overflow.
Why does God want to bless you so much? There is a coming supernatural harvest unlike anything we have ever seen before. It is a harvest of ideas, creativity, inventions, talents, expansion, and influence. It is a spiritual harvest of miracles and souls as well as a vast harvest of financial blessings. Increasingly, “the wealth of the sinner” is increasingly being “stored up for the righteous” (Proverbs 13:22).
And you can be part of it!
Why is this coming supernatural harvest so significant? I am fully convinced that God wants to bestow financial blessing on people who will generously support His work and help carry the message of His Son to the world.
God’s divine design for your financial success will not happen without your cooperation! The release of God’s blessings in your life is connected to your obedience, for the Bible declares: “And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God” (Deuteronomy 28:2).
Sowing always precedes reaping, and seedtime always precedes harvest.
This Amazing, Sacred Season
God is moving mightily today. He is shaking the nations. We have a great work to do. He has promised to supply whatever we need to accomplish all that He has called us to do:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. (John 14:12-14)
My heartfelt prayer is this: May the Lamb of God bless you richly in all that you do for Him in the days to come: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).
This is an amazing season—the Day of Atonement—the most solemn of all feasts.
I pray that God will use this sacred season and your Atonement offering to revolutionize your life, and that He will pour out more blessings than you ever dreamed possible.
For it is “not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6)…
Preaching the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ,
teaching the unchanging Word of God,
and expecting the mighty and miraculous,
power of the Holy Spirit,
.YOM KIPPUR ..In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and you shall not do any work ... For on that day he shall provide atonement for you to cleanse you from all your sins before the L-RD. -Leviticus 16:29-30
Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast and/or attend synagogue services on this day. Yom Kippur occurs on the 10th day of Tishri. The holiday is instituted at Leviticus 23:26 et seq.
The name "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement," and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year. In Days of Awe, I mentioned the "books" in which G-d inscribes all of our names. On Yom Kippur, the judgment entered in these books is sealed. This day is, essentially, your last appeal, your last chance to change the judgment, to demonstrate your repentance and make amends.
As I noted in Days of Awe, Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur is a complete Sabbath; no work can be performed on that day. It is well-known that you are supposed to refrain from eating and drinking (even water) on Yom Kippur. It is a complete, 25-hour fast beginning before sunset on the evening before Yom Kippur and ending after nightfall on the day of Yom Kippur. The Talmud also specifies additional restrictions that are less well-known: washing and bathing, anointing one's body (with cosmetics, deodorants, etc.), wearing leather shoes (Orthodox Jews routinely wear canvas sneakers under their dress clothes on Yom Kippur), and engaging in sexual relations are all prohibited on Yom Kippur.
As always, any of these restrictions can be lifted where a threat to life or health is involved. In fact, children under the age of nine and women in childbirth (from the time labor begins until three days after birth) are not permitted to fast, even if they want to. Older children and women from the third to the seventh day after childbirth are permitted to fast, but are permitted to break the fast if they feel the need to do so. People with other illnesses should consult a physician and a rabbi for advice.
Most of the holiday is spent in the synagogue, in prayer. In Orthodox synagogues, services begin early in the morning (8 or 9 AM) and continue until about 3 PM. People then usually go home for an afternoon nap and return around 5 or 6 PM for the afternoon and evening services, which continue until nightfall. The services end at nightfall, with the blowing of the tekiah gedolah, a long blast on the shofar. See Rosh Hashanah for more about the shofar and its characteristic blasts.
It is customary to wear white on the holiday, which symbolizes purity and calls to mind the promise that our sins shall be made as white as snow (Is. 1:18).
